Night flying presents its own unique challenges. According to statistics, night flying is 5 times as dangerous as day flying, with landings being 3 times as hazardous as takeoffs.
Reduced visibility, illusions, inoperative/marginal equipment in the aircraft or on the ground, that during the day might present no hazard, all contribute to the risks of night flying.
Knowing what can go wrong and being completely prepared, with backup procedures and equipment is the best defense against those risks.
